Zidane: Beckham is class

Feb 12, 2013 7:38:00 PM
The France icon has lauded his former Real Madrid teammate's professionalism and hunger for the game as he embarks on another European adventure at the age of 37.
Real Madrid and France legend Zinedine Zidane has paid tribute to David Beckham as his former teammate prepares for a spell with Paris Saint-Germain.

The former Manchester United midfielder and England captain is due to start working with Les Parisiens on Wednesday, and Zidane has lauded him for his professionalism and longevity in the sport.

"Beckham is someone who comes 45 minutes early to training and leaves a half an hour after everyone has left," Zidane told Canal+. "He is truly a great professional. Some players today could benefit from his level of professionalism.

"Now he 37-years-old, he does not play every game for 90 minutes, but is still capable of influencing any match in the 20 or 30 minutes he has. This is a man who loves the sport. At the age of 37, his passion is still there. The guy is class."

PSG boss Carlo Ancelotti revealed Beckham could make his debut against PSG rivals Marseille later this month. The two-time MLS Cup winner met his new teammates prior to Tuesday's 2-1 victory over Valencia in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie.

Iniesta: Guardiola will be great for Bayern

Iniesta: Guardiola will be great for Bayern

Feb 12, 2013 7:55:00 AM
The Spain international is pleased to see his former coach return to the game, and has little doubt he will prove to be a success at the Bundesliga leaders
Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta is confident that Pep Guardiola will become an instant hit at Bayern Munich, and feels the successful coach is the right choice for the Bavarians.

The 42-year-old recently signed a three-year deal with the Allianz Arena side and will replace Jupp Heynckes at the helm at the end of the 2012-13 campaign.

"I am happy for Pep. It's important for football and for himself that a coach like him is training a club. He will try to get his new players used to his playing style. Bayern have some great players," Iniesta was quoted as saying by Bild.

"I believe Pep will hold on to his own style. Bayern's playing style is quit similar to Barcelona's style. Possession is quite important, plus they have a number of players of the highest level.

"Pep always gives 100 per cent in what he does. He is very close to his players, both on and off the pitch. It will be something great for the Bayern players. The fans can also look forward to him, something wonderful will happen.

"I don't expect any difficulties. He will take charge of a great club and try to win the people's respect. I have no doubt that he will succeed."

Guardiola is currently enjoying a one-year sabbatical away from the game after leaving Barcelona last summer.

Ronaldo or Van Persie will decide Real Madrid-Manchester United, says Solskjaer

Feb 11, 2013 4:20:00 PM

The Norwegian believes that the Champions League tie will between the two European giants will be very tight and could be decided by a moment of magic from either attacker

Former Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes the Red Devils' clash withReal Madrid on Wednesday will be decided by Robin van Persie or Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Dutchman moved to Old Trafford from Arsenal in the summer, and has led his new side's title charge, while the Portuguese has been in fine form of late, scoring a hat-trick against Sevilla on Saturday.

And Solskjaer believes that the result may well come down to which of the duo are on form on the night.

"Both coaches know each other well and the teams are very evenly matched. I think it will be decided by a moment of genius from Van Persie or Ronaldo," he told Marca.

"I want Manchester United to win, but, for the first time, I really don't know what's going to happen. I'd like a 4-3, with Cristiano scoring three goals.

"Almost everything I know, I've learned from Sir Alex. We both believe in ourselves, we always want to win, we invest in young people and work hard. The bigger the challenge, the more Ferguson gets out of it."

Zubizarreta praises 'magician' Iniesta after Barcelona win

Zubizarreta praises 'magician' Iniesta after Barcelona win

Feb 10, 2013 3:23:00 PM
The Blaugrana sporting director singled out the playmaker for special praise following his performance in the 6-1 win over Getafe on Sunday morning
Andoni Zubizarreta labelled Andres Iniesta a "magician" after the midfielder's display in Barcelona's win over Getafe.

The midfielder set up the opening goal for Alexis Sanchez after just six minutes, and also scored himself in the 90th minute of a match the Blaugrana controlled from start to finish.

"We had a magician wearing orange boots and the number eight, handing out the ball," the sporting director told Canal +.

The win moves Barca 16 points clear of arch-rivals Real Madrid and Zubizarreta added that he had never spoken with president Sandro Rosell about the prospect of signing a Blancos player, following his revelation that he was admirer of one of Jose Mourinho's players.

"I speak very little with him [Rosell] about players, and never about Real Madrid players. Only when we play against them. They have a great squad and the Castilla as well," he explained.

The former goalkeeper then revealed he will paying a visit to coach Tito Vilanova as he continues his recovery from a cancer relapse.

"I'm going to see him [Tito] in person and we will talk about football, as we usually do when we are together, and so I can touch him and see him. We all also discuss the future."

Keshi looks to ensure Nigeria keep improving after Afcon win

Keshi looks to ensure Nigeria keep improving after Afcon win

Feb 10, 2013 9:41:00 PM
The coach praised his side after their Cup of Nations win on Sunday but vowed that the team would continue to improve and build on their recent success
Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has said winning the Africa Cup of Nations is just another step for his side as he looks to build a "great" team.
Keshi, who took over after the side failed to qualify for the 2012 edition of the tournament, watched on as his players won in Johannesburg thanks to Sunday Mba’s 40th minute goal against Burkina Faso.
But the side's boss, who captained Nigeria to the Afcon title in 1994, said the team must continue to improve.
“We’re not there yet," he told reporters.
“My plan was to build a good team for Nigeria when I came on board almost a year-and-a-half ago.
“Now we are on the path to building a great side,” added Keshi, who is only the second person to win the trophy as player and coach.
Nigeria will now represent Africa in the Confederations Cup later in the year.

'I am in the best condition of my life' - Van Persie reveals secret behind prolific Manchester United form

'I am in the best condition of my life' - Van Persie  reveals secret behind prolific Manchester United form

The Red Devils' striker has scored 22 goals in 28 games since his summer move from Arsenal, and reveals his improved physique allows him to compete more easily with defenders

Robin van Persie says his more muscular frame is behind his scintillating recent form for Manchester United, and the £24 million summer signing from Arsenal feels he is in the best shape of his life for the Premier League leaders.

The 29-year-old forward has netted 22 goals in 28 games to prove an astute purchase by Sir Alex Ferguson as his side look forward to a Sunday afternoon game against Everton with the chance of going 12 points clear of Manchester City.

And the Netherlands striker - who has struggled with injuries throughout his career - believes his current run this season is largely due to becoming heavier and being able to compete with opposition defenders with more strength.

"I am on a streak of matches and goals that has never happened to me before and it is all down to my fitness," he told reporters.

"My body weight used to always be around 77 kilos. Now I weigh 81 kilos. That is a difference of more than eight pounds -  and it is all pure muscle.

"I haven't been spending more time in the gym lifting weights. I have got myself super-fit and as a result I am both heavier and stronger.

"It means I am stronger in battles with defenders, but I also feel like I am in the best condition of my life."

The prolific Dutchman has scored a number of vital goals against the likes of former club Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea this season, and has warned the rest of the league that he is coping well with his current workload.

He continued: "I also recover faster. The week before last, I played on Wednesday and Saturday.

"There was only two-and-a-half days between the games, yet I felt super-fit and had no trouble doing extra work in the final part of the game."

Manchester United - Everton Preview: Toffees winless at Old Trafford since 1992

David Moyes will be looking to improve his woeful record at the home of the Red Devils, but Sir Alex Ferguson's side have only been beaten once on their own turf this season

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is likely to make one change from his side's 1-0 win at Fulham, drafting in Ryan Giggs for Michael Carrick (hip), who sat out England’s 2-1 win over Brazil in midweek.

Ashley Young could return to the Red Devils squad after recovering from a knee injury, but is likely to start on the bench, whilst Phil Jones (illness) is ruled out alongside long-term absentee Darren Fletcher (illness).

Phil Jagielka failed to start England’s friendly on Wednesday due to a slight knock, but is set to start at right-back for Everton, with David Moyes shorn of full-backs Tony Hibbert (calf) and Seamus Coleman (hip).

The Everton boss has no other fresh injury concerns to contend with, and so is likely to name the same XI that came from behind to draw 3-3 with Aston Villa last weekend.

  DID YOU KNOW?
  • Manchester United have won 11 out of 12 league games at home this season.
  • The Red Devils’ tally of 62 points after 25 games is their highest-ever points haul at this stage in a Premier League season.
  • Sir Alex Ferguson’s side have scored 32 league goals at home so far this season; only Arsenal (33) have registered more.
  • Everton have a poor record at Old Trafford, having not won there since August 1992.
  • However, the Toffees have only lost twice in their last six games against Manchester United.
  • Steven Pienaar (pictured right) bagged a late equaliser in this fixture last season as the sides drew 4-4, equalling the highest-ever score in this fixture.

Victor Moses the star attraction at 2013 Africa Cup of Nations final as Chelsea star comes of age

Victor Moses the star attraction at 2013 Africa Cup of  Nations final as Chelsea star comes of age

Feb 10, 2013 9:00:00 AM
As Nigeria prepare to battle Burkina Faso in the Afcon final, the spotlight is on the Blues' Super Eagle and his breakthrough during the competition
COMMENT
By Ed Dove When the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations commenced last month, three young starlets were expected to shine in South Africa.
Younes Belhanda, star of Montpellier's improbable Ligue 1 title win in 2012, and Porto's Christian Atsu failed to seize the moment and truly emerge. But Victor Moses finds himself on the doorsteps to immortality as 170 million Nigerians turn to him to seal glory.
The tournament thus far has been a microcosm of Moses' career. Early promise created scintillating anticipation across Nigeria, as a nation heralded the twinkle-toed forward, who had been inducted into the international scene as the figurehead of Stephen Keshi’s revolution.
Then, reality set in as stodgy, stubborn defences, and the pragmatism of international football prevented the Lagos-born attacker from stealing the show for the Super Eagles.
A subdued opening to the Cup, a tournament that struggled to spark early on, threatened to dampen the goodwill that surrounded Keshi’s troops, including his most-prized asset. Eventually, the sublime talent and supreme ability shone through, and Moses is on the cusp of greatness with the west African powerhouse.
The breakthrough came against Ethiopia, when he was the catalyst in a famous victory; the difference between progression and elimination.
Struggling to find a breakthrough, and labouring to a 0-0 draw, Moses employed two of the qualities that made him so coveted in his early days. His magnificent close control and searing pace were too much for the besieged defence to contend with.
NIGERIA'S JOURNEY TO THE FINAL
Group Stages
 v Burkina Faso
v Zambia
v Ethiopia
Quarter Final
v Cote d'Ivoire
Semi Final
v Mali

D 1-1
D 1-1
W 2-0

W 2-1
W 4-1
As Nigeria upped the ante, their secret weapon surged to the fore. Twice Moses was too direct, too intense, for his inexperienced opposition, twice the Ethiopians were forced into fouls inside their penalty area, and twice the Chelsea man stepped up to the spot and dispatched the kick with an aplomb usually associated with men 10 years his senior.
‘Moses leads to the Promised Land’ – the headline was written even before the final whistle.
Whilst this game demonstrated his ability to terrify and to bewilder, the subsequent contests were evidence of a subtler side to his game, the mature qualities of the 22-year-old.
Few spoke of Nigeria’s superstars in the build up to the side’s clash with Cote d’Ivoire in the quarter-final. It was the tournament favourites, the Golden Generation, who dominated the previews, while Moses merely received a line or two; a menace to Ethiopia, sure, but likely to be squeezed out by the composure and experience of the Elephants.
He was once again influential – the Ivorians struggled to deal with his direct running and ferocious dribbling. Yaya Toure’s first-half shoulder-barge demonstrated the discomfort the youngster caused. While Emmanuel Emenike and Sunday Mba stole the show, Moses was a constant thorn in the opponents' side, persistently prompting and provoking with his ambition and his ability.
Unlikely progression was celebrated across the nation, as Keshi’s youthful outfit grew in stature and confidence.
The semi-final against Mali presented similar magnitude and equivalent pressure, the like of which would make lesser figures crumble and desist. No-one in the Nigerian camp could have been ignorant of the immense challenge that lay ahead – but few would have ignored the significance of the occasion either.
The battle was another watershed for the inexperienced side. This was not victory snatched from the jaws of failure, nor was it the unlikely upset of a lethargic, complacent superpower. It was a demolition, a rout, 3-0 up at half-time, 4-1 at full-time, a true coming-of-age for Keshi’s men.
And Moses was at the heart of it.
His deft wing-play, delicious footwork, and delectable cross produced Nigeria’s first goal, his endeavour affording left back Elderson with an unmissable opportunity to head them into the lead. Moses was also the architect for the side’s second goal, his inventive running and visionary passing forging an opening for his strikers to profit.
Regardless of the result in the final, this tournament, and Moses’s performances in the latter stages, have catapulted the Chelsea man into the continental spotlight. His performances in the knockout rounds, against west African heavyweights, have finally underlined a talent that has threatened to emerge for years.
In the beginning of January, Moses departed Stamford Bridge as a bright prospect, a prodigal hope for west Africa’s fallen giants, he returns a man; a composed and established individual, capable of bewitching the most composed of defences, and of drawing blood from the tightest of back lines.
Victory, however, may well propel Moses into the upper echelon of Africa’s pantheon of Greats.
